Studio Move + Changing My Focus

Friends, change is everywhere in my life right now! I'm moving my studio and simplifying. My business is transforming. And we're partnering with SelfDesign to support us in homeschooling our son.

It's a lot, but it's good. This is a year of allowing, inviting, and trusting. I truly feel connected to the spirit of ease more than I ever have. I'm saying yes to a lot of things I wouldn't ordinarily, and holding my no's to things that consume too much space or just aren't feeling right. I'm letting myself be "drawn by the strange pull of what I really love" (rumi). The result – walking a path that is winding freely, and being intentional in how I choose to follow it without trying to control where it leads too much. Trusting and leaning in.

Studio Move

I'm moving! Well, my studio is. Going from 100 Braid Street Studios back to our attic, my original studio space lovingly known by many as the loft;) This is a huge step in simplifying my life and work, in going back to a quieter place of stillness. Having a studio away from home has been truly wonderful and connected me with a beautiful creative community who will be missed (and it gave me way more space just a few short blocks away!) but I'm ready for the shift back to quiet simplicity. I am in the process of re-creating my sacred space at home - stay tuned for pics! I'm so excited about this change. It's going to be beautiful and I'm so looking forward to creating soulfully in it.

Transforming My Business

I'm excited to announce that Red Pear Creative will be migrating to a new entity under my own name, Ginger Deverell. I am taking a step away from my graphic design work to be with my family, support my son's homeschooling and focus on my art. Red Pear has been my boutique company for 12 years and I've grown with it and received so much creative fulfillment from my work with clients during these years. Now I'm looking forward to the next steps on my journey. You will see my new artist brand emerge over the coming year – it's personal, feminine and whimsical:) I will continue offering and expanding my artful product line and selling original paintings. I will be exhibiting my work more which is a neat shift for me. I will be spending more time tinkering around with surface pattern designs and hopefully producing some neat products for all of you to enjoy:) I will make room to play and experiment in the studio. And I will continue to work at getting my surface designs and artwork licensed while creating art that is true, beauty-full and meaningful, and living a slow and present lifestyle with my family.

New Focus
 
This next chapter is about family, a homeschooling adventure, creating spaciousness in life, following our bliss, trusting our own compasses, simplifying and enjoying life's simple pleasures together. It's about having more stillness in our days. It's about moving closer to licensing my work in a way that I'm really inspired by, carefully choosing boutiques to carry my whimsical gifts and products, and being true to the path that I know in my heart. It's feeling like all the pieces of work and family are becoming woven together rather than being two separate paths that occasionally cross. The road ahead is feeling wide open.

And so goes the building of an intentional life. One step at a time, and feeling so right and true. I read this quote in this inspiring post from Andrea Scher on her Superhero Journal and I was SO incredibly moved I thought, Yes. Yes. It has been my compass since.

Successful Crawl!

Friends, the New West Cultural Crawl this weekend was a fabulous success! There was a generous flow of visitors through the studio all weekend long. So much beautiful humanity to absorb. So much enthusiasm and delight. And I'm thrilled with the products and art that went home with the lovely people who bought from me and fellow artists in the 100 Braid St Studios space. These are a few pics I snapped on my phone. Lovely, yeah?

Studio christening with a dear friend

Recently my dear friend and I had a late night creative blitz and picnic at my new studio. Celebrating the space, the transition and change, the newness and possibility—it was memorable and so meaningful. Of course there was girl talk and geeking out over creative biz stuff too ;)

To top off the celebration she gifted me this beautiful necklace from The Barefoot Contessa, one of my fave boutiques on Main Street. It's by Little Wren, a Vancouver local brand. The type layered with the dried flowers are beautifully symbolic of our friendship (she's a writer, I'm an artist), and the words play and action feel particularly relevant for both of us – both doers and go-getters. Love it.

The studio is becoming home more and more every day. It felt good to give it a proper welcome.

I'm settling into my new space at 100 Braid St Studios. It's beautiful, inspires me, and so far I'm really loving this change. Many good things to come! Here is a tour.

My New Studio Space

The main exhibition, event and workshop galleria space @ 100 Braid St Studios. 

I’ve got big news friends – I’m thrilled to announce that I have a new studio space. 100 Braid St Studios & Gallery is a converted industrial building in New West that has been transformed into an inclusive working art studio, a dream brought to life by local artist Susan Greig. There are 14 artist studios, a gallery and exhibition space, a “splatter room” and workshop and class facilities. The building is urban chic, bright and spacious, community focused, and very welcoming. My studio sits along the south facing wall with lots of natural light and a cozy inviting vibe. And it’s a short few blocks walk from my home (walking culture, check). I am so excited about the connections with other creative souls and the business expansion this new experience will bring (creative community, check). On the home-front my family will reclaim some physical space and have a more present mama (healthy separation between my worlds, check). Collaborating with the studios will create more opportunities for exhibiting, events and visibility (exposure, check).

This collage of beautiful vintage windows was artfully conceived of and created by Susan Greig and her team - isn't it stunning? It creates an amazing play on the space, making the studios accessible yet separate from the public space. Love this design feature of the space.

A lot of thought is going into setting up my studio to create a sacred space that will inspire and nourish, and be practical for the three areas of my business – visual art, surface patterns and graphic design. My vision is for all three to carry equal weight, each with its’ own zone in the layout. Plus of course a cozy corner where all the great creative blitzes brew and percolate, and I take naps and daydream. And so important to me, spaciousness and lightness. Check out my Braid St Studio pinterest board I'm using for ideating and planning. And there's also the art workspaces/ studio board I've been pinning to for awhile now, dreaming of a studio like this (pretty close to a lot of the dream images I've pinned actually, especially the windows).

 I'm keeping this post-it note tacked to the side of my art cart, reminding me through my process to always trust my instincts.

I am so delighted to be joining 100 Braid Studios, and am so grateful to Susan Greig for being brave and going after her dream and bringing this amazing space to New West. All of us artists will grow and expand. And very grateful to my support system for having my back and encouraging me on my journey.
